Oxidation-Induced Increase In Photoreactivity of Bovine Retinal Lipid Extract

2017

Open access original paper Source : 10th EPR Workshop on Applications of EPR in Biology and Medicine, 2016 in Krakow, POLAND.; International audience; The mammalian retina contains a high level of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (22:6) (DHA), which are highly susceptible to oxidation. It has been shown that one of the products of DHA oxidation-carboxyethylpyrrole (CEP), generated in situ, causes modifications of retinal proteins and induces inflammation response in the outer retina. These contributing factors may play a role in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is also possible that some of the lipid oxidation products are photoreactiv…

Rho resonance, timelike pion form factor, and implications for lattice studies of the hadronic vacuum polarization

2020

We study isospin-1 P-wave ππ scattering in lattice QCD with two flavors of O(a) improved Wilson fermions. For pion masses ranging from mπ=265 MeV to mπ=437 MeV, we determine the energy spectrum in the center-of-mass frame and in three moving frames. We obtain the scattering phase shifts using Lüscher’s finite-volume quantization condition. Fitting the dependence of the phase shifts on the scattering momentum to a Breit-Wigner form allows us to determine the corresponding ρ mass mρ and gρππ coupling. By combining the scattering phase shifts with the decay matrix element of the vector current, we calculate the timelike pion form factor, Fπ, and compare the results to the Gounaris-Sakurai repr…

Magic informationally complete POVMs with permutations

2017

Eigenstates of permutation gates are either stabilizer states (for gates in the Pauli group) or magic states, thus allowing universal quantum computation [M. Planat and Rukhsan-Ul-Haq, Preprint 1701.06443]. We show in this paper that a subset of such magic states, when acting on the generalized Pauli group, define (asymmetric) informationally complete POVMs. Such IC-POVMs, investigated in dimensions $2$ to $12$, exhibit simple finite geometries in their projector products and, for dimensions $4$ and $8$ and $9$, relate to two-qubit, three-qubit and two-qutrit contextuality.

Study of J/ψ Production in Jets

2017

The production of $J/\psi$ mesons in jets is studied in the forward region of proton-proton collisions using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The fraction of the jet transverse momentum carried by the $J/\psi$ meson, $z \equiv p_{\rm T}(J/\psi)/p_{\rm T}({\rm jet})$, is measured using jets with $p_{\rm T}({\rm jet}) > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.5 < \eta({\rm jet}) < 4.0$. The observed $z$ distribution for $J/\psi$ mesons produced in $b$-hadron decays is consistent with expectations. However, the results for prompt $J/\psi$ production do not agree with predictions based on fixed-order non-relativistic QCD. This is the first measurement o…

OPERADS AND JET MODULES

2005

Let $A$ be an algebra over an operad in a cocomplete closed symmetric monoidal category. We study the category of $A$-modules. We define certain symmetric product functors of such modules generalising the tensor product of modules over commutative algebras, which we use to define the notion of a jet module. This in turn generalises the notion of a jet module over a module over a classical commutative algebra. We are able to define Atiyah classes (i.e. obstructions to the existence of connections) in this generalised context. We use certain model structures on the category of $A$-modules to study the properties of these Atiyah classes. The purpose of the paper is not to present any really de…

Partially implicit Runge-Kutta methods for wave-like equations

2012

In this work we present a new class of Runge-Kutta (RK) methods for solving systems of hyperbolic equations with a particular structure, generalization of a wave-equation. The new methods are {\it partially implicit} in the sense that a proper subset of the equations of the system contains some terms which are treated implicitly. These methods can be viewed as a particular case of the implicit-explicit (IMEX) RK methods for systems of equations with wave-like structure. For these systems, the optimal methods with the new structure are easier to derive than the IMEX ones, specially when aiming at higher-order (up to fourth-order in this work). The methods are constructed considering the clas…

Topological confinement in QCD2

1994

In two dimensional SU(N) theories confinement can be understood as a topological property of the vacuum. In the bosonized version of two dimensional theories no trivial boundary conditions (topology) play a crucial role. They are inevitable if one wants to describe non singlet states. In abelian bosonization, color is the charge of a topological current in terms of a non-linear meson field. We show that cofinement appears as the dynamical collapse of the topology associated with its non trivial boundary conditions. Vento Torres, Vicente, Vicente.Vento@ific.uv.es

Quantum Field Theory under external conditions: gravitation and electrodynamics

2022

The semiclassical approximation in Quantum Field Theory is commonly used to study the propagation of quantized fields in classical backgrounds and accounts for fascinating non-perturbative quantum phenomena such as the spontaneous creation of particles induced by (non-trivial) external configurations. In this context, the computation of vacuum expectation values of physical observables becomes a complex issue, and advanced renormalization techniques are required to tame the new ultraviolet divergences caused by the external backgrounds. In curved spacetimes, all these interesting features are commonly studied within the Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime framework, initiated in the ea…

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

2020

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (eþe− þ p or μþμ− þ p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of ffiffiffi s p ¼ 13 TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb−1. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee þ p (μμ þ p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced f…

Charged jet cross section and fragmentation in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

2019

Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published article’s title, journal citation, and DOI. We report the differential charged jet cross section and jet fragmentation distributions measured with the ALICE detector in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s=7  TeV. Jets with pseudorapidity |η|40  GeV/c, the pythia calculations also agree with the measured charged jet cross section. pythia6 simulations describe the fragmentation distributions to 15%. Larger discrepancies are observed for pythia8. SCOAP
